Oh, the shirt dress. How I love thee. Easy, elegant and always chic- this is quite the versatile option. As you know, I adore white dresses, soooo there should be no surprise that I own a white shirt dress. I’ve already waxed poetically about the black one from Rachel Parcell that is basically the best shirt dress I’ve ever owned. This lovely beauty I’m sporting today is from Banana Republic. I mentioned it in a summer sale post before, and I honestly think this dress- or something similar should be in everyone’s closet.

As we head into fall, I know many of you may not feel comfortable wearing white after Labor Day (although you TOTALLY CAN), so I’ve included other options. A more “fall friendly” shirt dress is chambray (similar to denim in color, but not nearly as thick or cumbersome). These dresses were popular in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and they’re back! All options below are under $120 and a lot are under $50.

My rules for shopping for a shirt dress: Make sure it’s comfortable. As with any outfit, make sure it’s not annoying to wear longer than 2 minutes. Length is key. Do the sit test and assess if it’s too short. I love this white dress and it’s great for every day errands, etc, but there is no way I can sit down with this hem and not worry about my legs hanging out. If that’s something that would bother you- check first! Chest width is important. If it pull at your bust I would pass. Nothing ruins a cute outfit like your bra peeking out. If it’s only a slight pull, invest in some double stick tape and place it between the buttons. I swear by this stuff. This is a very easy and casual way to look cute. It can be worn with flats, booties, casual sneakers, or even sandals. Very versatile! Dare I say, one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe.
Look into a shirt dress, ladies!
