The Nordstrom Anniversary sale begins tomorrow for cardholders and opens to the public next Friday. As much as I love a good shopping trip, I want to encourage you to shop smarter and go into the sale with an idea of what you need by assessing what holes you have in your current wardrobe.
Simple and versatile, a good pair of jeans should last you years. I would suggest a pair either skinny or straight leg (bootcut are coming back too) in a dark wash.
Tops & Blouses
This all depends on how you spend your time. If your job requires business professional attire, you should opt for more work appropriate blouses. My life these days is MUCH more casual, so I’m always on the hunt for cute and casual (machine washable) tops.
Sweaters & Cardigans
Every woman should have a good black sweater (it’s easy to dress up or down), a good casual cardigan in grey or camel, and a crew neck sweater in a color that best suits your coloring. Jewel tones (blues, greens, and purples in rich hues) are the most flattering on everyone.
This can be anything from a chic leather jacket, a field or utility jacket, or even a smart looking blazer. It goes back to your wardrobe needs. Think about what you wear the most and ponder the most acceptable light outerwear option.
A little black dress is always the number one staple for every wardrobe. I like having one with sleeves for the cooler months and a sleeveless one that I can layer under things for the rest of the year. Wrap dresses are universally flattering, and I often steer clients in that direction. I also love sweater dresses because they’re so snuggly. Haha, I know that’s not a very stylish term, but honestly, I love a good sweater dress with boots in the fall!
The most important part of any wardrobe. Don’t believe me? Try walking an entire day in uncomfortable shoes. Or ones that give you blisters. No thanks. Shoes should be as utilitarian as they are attractive, so I will always suggest a flat, a heel (in whatever height you want), a tall shaft boot, and an ankle bootie. There are obvious variants of each, but this is the time of year to save on shoes, so don’t forget them!!
I know that we often skimp on these, but a good set of undergarments is essential for pulling a look together. VPL (visible panty line) is NEVER acceptable, nor is being able to see the outline of your bra under a sweater. Invest in the basics and you will thank me!
The number of each other these items you own depend on a few things: budget, closet space, and need. (Note I said need, not want.) If you need a bit more info on your closet cleanout, check out my series of blog posts about that here. Don’t forget, if you get a Nordstrom Card now, you can get early access to the sale!
